Plants and fungi
Plants and fungi are an essential part of the ecosystem of the World, containing thousands of species across all habitats. The variety can vary and includes the smallest moss or lichen. The fungi that remain unhidden until they put up their reproductive bodies of the characteristic mushroom seen in the Autumn. They range in size up to the tallest trees via flowers, bushes and shrubs that provide food for a variety of insect and mammal life.
What you can see here
In here are a collection of galleries showing plants, mosses, lichens and fungi from a variety of different habitats from around Britain. This includes flowers and leaves growing in woodland under the trees, plants growing on moorland or along the coast or just in general waste areas. There are also groups of photographs of bluebells, snowdrops and orchids. They have been split into various groups based on the type of plant or where it is found. Try exploring the different galleries to see if you see images you look or look for more specific images in one of these categories:
- Orchids - these are all photos of orchids that are found growing around England
- Bulbs & Tubers are photos taken of plants growing from bulbs or tubers including snowdrops, bluebells, wild garlic, three-cornered leeks and irises
- Woodland contains plants that have been photographed in a woodland setting including dog violets, wild strawberries, moschatel and celandines amongst others.
- Grassland, Moorland and Heathland contains images that have been taken of plants that have been found growing on moorland or heathland or in various types of grassland or meadows
- Coast, Water and marginal are photos that have been taken of plants growing in a coastal setting or in ponds or lakes. It also contains marginals where the plants are growing in the damp areas next to ponds
- Misc habitats is a category that plants that can aren't fussy about where they grow but can grow in almost any area. These images have mostly been taken in various hedgerows or verges
- The gallery Succulent contains plants including stonecrops and navelwort
- Grasses, Reeds, Sedges, Ferns and Brackens are images that I have taken of various grass, reed, sedge, fern and bracken species that have been taken in woodland, wetlands or reedbeds around the country
- Trees and shrubs contains both photos of whole trees and macro images of flowers from various different trees and shrubs including hazels, gorses and brooms
- Fungi, lichen and mosses is a large category containing varied macro photos of a variety of species of mushrooms and toadstools, lichens and mosses, mostly growing in woodlands from around the country
- The gallery Abstract contains a selection of images that are taken of seeds or leaves of various plants
Where have these been taken
All the images in these galleries have been taken across various habitats in the UK. It includes the fenlands of Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire including Lakenheath, Minsmere, Burwell and Wicken. Woodlands from across the country including Wayland, Thetford in Norfolk and Suffolk and Horner, Hawkcombe, Dunster and Hodders Coombe in Somerset. Heathlands can be found in many locations including Cavenham and Minsmere in Suffolk whereas Moorland is predominantly Exmoor or the Quantocks
