Fungi, lichen and mosses
There are around 15000 species of fungi found growing in the UK, many growing their root like mycelium hidden in the ground or rotten wood before the fruiting body, the classic fungi, comes up. Lichens are half fungi and half algae, sometimes even cyanobacteria as well. There are around 1800 different species of lichen found in the UK growing on trees, and rocks. Mosses are a group of bryophytes often found in damp conditions, of which there are over 1000 different types found growing in the UK
