Grasshoppers, crickets and groundhoppers
The sound of grasshoppers and crickets chirping is a classic sound of the English countryside as they communicate vast distances whilst hidden amongst the vegetation. There are 23 species of cricket, 11 species of grasshopper and 3 species of groundhopper that occur in the UK the majority of which are herbivores.

This collection of pictures macro and close up photographs taken in various habitats from around the UK. Many of these are well camouflaged in the plants they are hiding in as you can see with the greens of the meadow grasshoppers or the speckled bush cricket, or the brown of the field grasshoppers or dark bush crickets. If you look closely you can see the patternation in the spots, speckles and stripes in all of them
